Turning Ideas Into Licensing Wins With inventRight Guidance
How "One Simple Idea" helped Miranda license two games
Independent inventor and game designer Miranda Dumas licensed two games using insights from inventRightTV videos and resources like Stephen Key’s book, One Simple Idea. She learned to target the right companies, create a focused sell sheet, and contact potential licensees with confidence. Her first licensed game, Contrarium, has launched worldwide.
“Thank you for all your wonderful products, books and videos. You actually helped me a lot through your book, One Simple Idea. I first bought that book about 15 years ago when I was into developing my game ideas. Eventually, I self-published an app and card game on a small scale. They were good, but I’m pretty reserved and not a great marketer.
Anyway, after leaving my games for a decade or so, I decided to get back into developing them. So, again, I bought One Simple Idea, as I had moved and lost my old copy.) I also got the audible version and deliberately would listen to it repeatedly in the mornings with a distinct aim of trying to normalize the idea of approaching companies with ideas.
For someone who hasn’t licensed any ideas they’ve created, it can seem a bit abstract or unrealistic to think it’s possible. So, I wanted to change my perception, which your book helped me to do. I would think, companies probably approach other businesses all the time to sell some product or get them to stock something. It is just everyday business. So I tried to cultivate this sense and make the process seem every day.
I approached a few US companies and submitted the game, but didn’t hear back. Then I decided to go local (I live in Australia) and contacted a book company and asked if I could send a one-page information sheet. They said yes, and it went from there after they saw my sell sheet.
I used some other books on game design by Joe Slack. One Simple Idea gave me the understanding to target companies that seemed to already be selling similar but not competing products.
The best part is that I have now licensed a second game to the same company only six weeks ago. Then, they asked if I would consult with them for some ideas for another game they are developing.
Just over a year ago, I wouldn’t have believed that by now I would have licensed two games and consulted regarding game design!”
