“The difference between an idea and a successful product is often a mindset.”
Over decades of licensing products, protecting intellectual property, building businesses and coaching thousands of inventors, Stephen Key, Kevin Prince and Courtney Laschkewitsch noticed a pattern. People who succeed consistently share a small set of powerful mindsets. People who struggle tend to operate from a handful of limiting assumptions.
In The Power Mindsets, the authors reveal the frameworks that help innovators recognize opportunities, navigate uncertainty, overcome setbacks, make better decisions and take meaningful action when others hesitate.
Whether you are developing your first product or your fiftieth, these mindsets can help you move ideas forward with greater confidence and speed.
More than just noticing a problem, it's the belief that solving it will make a difference for yourself, for others, and maybe even for the world. This mindset fuels inventors to keep going and ultimately succeed.
The simplest ideas often look effortless, but that simplicity is the result of countless hours of testing and thought. A playful mindset that never settles, always pushing toward a better solution.
Being curious enough to explore, cautious enough to question, and practical enough to pursue only what works. Question your assumptions while keeping an open mind to new possibilities.
Always assume good intentions, but double-check everything. When working on something that could change your life, you must stay on top of every detail and follow up constantly.
Master the art of storytelling to express your invention's benefits in ways others instantly understand and get excited about. Clear communication and contagious passion drive people to take action.
The ability to adjust long-term plans and direction in response to changing circumstances without losing sight of your overall goal. Stay flexible without losing focus on your mission.
Not just talking about ideas, but actually shipping them. It is about taking action, getting results, and finishing what you start, no matter how messy or uncertain the process may be.
Understanding how, when, and why to use intellectual property tools strategically. Beyond protection, these tools can help you license, raise capital, and increase your company's valuation.
The determination to keep moving forward when the invention process becomes difficult, uncertain, or overwhelming. With clarity, discipline, resilience, and confidence, this turns knowledge into action and persistence into real results.

Co-founder, inventRight
Stephen Key has licensed his own inventions for decades. He has had products endorsed by Michael Jordan, Alex Trebek and Taylor Swift, and he has won two Edison Awards. He co-founded inventRight over 26 years ago, has written five books, published over a thousand articles in Forbes, Inc. and Entrepreneur, and has produced more than 1,200 videos on YouTube to help inventors learn for free.
He knows what it feels like to sit across the table from a company and negotiate a licensing deal. He knows what it takes to get a product from concept to royalty check, because he has done it over and over.

Registered patent agent, QuickPatents
Kevin Prince is a registered patent agent who has helped over 4,000 clients protect their ideas. More than 3,100 patents have been issued for his clients. He co-founded the Orange County Inventors Forum over 20 years ago and has been educating inventors there ever since. He is also an inventor himself, named on five patents of his own.
Kevin sees the legal and strategic side of inventing from the inside. He knows where people lose their rights before they even realize it, and what it takes to build intellectual property that holds up.

Contributor, inventRight coach
Courtney brings the coaching perspective from years of working directly with inventors through inventRight. As an inventor who has licensed multiple products herself, she understands both the excitement that starts an idea and the frustration that can set in during the long middle stretch. Her contributions draw from what she has seen repeatedly on coaching calls: the moments when inventors lose momentum, overthink obstacles, rediscover purpose, or turn a difficult problem into the very reason a company might want to license their idea.
“I have been watching the Mindset Series, and it is amazing! The knowledge I gained is useful not only in the invention process.”
“Fantastic! Real world cautions, suggestions and information. Thank you.”
“I have been attending inventRight educational events for a few years. The Power Mindsets was the best ever series by far. Great synergy.”
“Thank you so much, all of you. The Power Mindsets series has been inspiring and exactly what I need to keep motivated.”

As I was writing my new book The Power Mindsets, I found myself thinking about people like Mohamed Ali: Innovators who truly embody the principles this book is all about.
Mohamed’s journey is remarkable.
An engineer from Cairo, Egypt, he didn’t have the financial resources to start a company. Instead of allowing that to become an excuse, he made it a reason to learn. He immersed himself in licensing, intellectual property, and how to partner with companies around the world to bring his ideas to market.
His inspiration came from a simple but important problem. After seeing his young daughter put her finger near an electrical outlet, he invented the iLock, a product designed to help keep outlet plugs securely in place and improve child safety.
He licensed his technology internationally and used the revenue from those licensing agreements to build his own company.
Fast forward to today, and his company sells many different kinds of products. In total, he has sold more than 100 million units! That is incredible.
What makes Mohamed’s story even more inspiring is that he built a successful manufacturing business in Cairo—creating jobs and opportunities for many people. He didn’t let geography, limited resources, or conventional thinking define what was possible.
I’ve had the privilege of visiting Mohamed and his family in Egypt, touring his company, and seeing his products on store shelves firsthand. It’s an experience I’ll never forget.
Beyond his accomplishments, Mohamed is one of the kindest and most generous people you’ll meet. He’s always willing to share what he’s learned, encourage others, and help fellow inventors succeed. That’s a mindset that creates a lasting impact.
To me, Mohamed’s story is a powerful reminder that success isn’t about where you begin or what you have. It’s about your willingness to learn, adapt, persevere, and lift others along the way.
That’s the power of the right mindset.
Who has inspired you by turning obstacles into opportunities?

As I was writing my new book The Power Mindsets, I kept coming back to one important truth:
Success in innovation isn’t determined by who has the best prototype, the biggest budget, or even the strongest intellectual property.
It starts with mindset.
I’m proud to have been part of Veronica R.’s journey as an inventor. She embodies everything The Power Mindsets is about.
When Veronica started, she wasn’t focused on having everything figured out. She focused on learning. She worked hard, sought knowledge, stayed coachable, and refused to give up.
Today, more than 20 of her ideas for new products are licensed and on the market — an incredible achievement that reflects years of perseverance and dedication.
What I admire just as much is the person she’s become along the way. Veronica is a positive force in the inventor community, always willing to share what she’s learned, encourage others, and help fellow inventors move forward. That mindset of learning, giving back, and lifting others up is one of the most powerful lessons of all.
People often think success comes from patents, prototypes, manufacturing, or licensing strategies. Those things are important, but they are not where success begins.
Success begins with the right mindset.
Veronica’s journey is a reminder that passion, continuous learning, persistence, generosity, and the willingness to keep moving forward can open doors that once seemed impossible.
Congratulations, Veronica. I’m grateful to have been part of your journey, and I’m excited to see what you accomplish next.
What mindset has made the biggest difference in your own journey?
Kevin and I truly appreciate your support and cannot wait to share this book with you.
