The Importance Of Having A Partner When Inventing

by | Mar 28, 2022

I knew early on that I didn’t have all of the skills necessary to license my ideas — that I needed someone to bring my product ideas to life for me.

When I first started out, I was very fortunate to work with a very talented person named Russell Hicks.

I met Russell during my employment at the toy startup Worlds of Wonder, where he did all of the illustrations for the Teddy Ruxpin books and the world of Teddy Ruxpin.

We hit it off instantly, and we soon became 50-50 partners.

I would come up with the ideas, then Russell would bring them to life. It was as simple as me calling him up with an idea, and receiving a faxed illustration from him 20 minutes later.

My job was then to submit these drawings to companies.

Here’s one of the illustrations that he faxed over.
