The Adventure of Gathering Testimonials

Back when I was working closely with the folks at McGraw-Hill, they expressed a keen interest in gathering testimonials from well-known inventors for my upcoming book. I was genuinely thrilled about this opportunity. They requested that I compile a list of respected individuals in the industry who could offer testimonials. I put together a massive list of people I admired and sent it to McGraw-Hill. They were pleased with it.

But then, they dropped a surprise: “Now go get those testimonials,” they said. I was taken aback. I thought they would handle this part. Turns out, I had to reach out to these people myself—people I didn’t even know.

Testimonials play a crucial role; I get that. People read them on book jackets, and great testimonials help sell books. However, as a new writer, I didn’t expect that obtaining these testimonials would be my responsibility.

Here’s what I did.

Behind the Scenes: Gathering Testimonials for My Book

Reaching Out to Gary Dahl, the Pet Rock Inventor

At the top of my list was Gary Dahl, the creator of the pet rock. Growing up in Los Gatos, Gary’s story truly struck a chord with me. Imagine, he fashioned a smile on a rock and sold a whopping 1 million of them. He became my local hero.

Getting in touch with Gary proved a bit tricky. No luck with the telephone number search, but a little internet sleuthing revealed he had written a book. After reaching out to the publisher for his contact info, they warned me: “Here it is, but good luck. He’s not very friendly.”

Undeterred, I thought, “This is going to be fun.” Calling Gary, I led with, “Gary, you changed my life.” Even though he didn’t know me, I shared how his success significantly impacted my career. I used a technique I learned a few years back – who doesn’t like to be flattered?

Gary’s response? “What can I do for you, Stephen?” I explained that because of his success, I ventured into inventing products and was now writing a book with McGraw-Hill. It was all because of him. Requesting a testimonial, he replied, “No problem. Send me a couple of pages, and I will give you a testimonial.” Just like that.

His testimonial: “Stephen Key has written the book overflowing with all the important information that inventors need: a step-by-step guide through everything that goes into a successful product introduction.” – Gary Dahl, Pet Rock Inventor.

A Remarkable Encounter with Mark Victor Hanson

During a speaking tour in Australia, I had the honor of being the opening speaker for Mark Victor Hanson, the famous author behind the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. His authenticity left a lasting impression, and I held onto his card for years.

Recalling our conversation feels like it happened just yesterday. I nervously dialed Mark’s number.

“Hello Mark, this is Stephen Key. You probably don’t remember me, but I was one of the speakers in Australia with you.” To my surprise, Mark responded warmly, “Absolutely, I remember you. Whatever you want… yes.”

I couldn’t believe he said yes. Mark sensed I had a purpose for the call. He proved to be one of the most genuine and remarkable individuals I’ve ever met.

I shared a few pages with him, and his testimonial resonated with support: “Mr. Key’s brilliance, wisdom, and insight will make you rich. Buy this book!”

Shark Tank Connection: Barbara Corcoran’s Support

When I wanted a testimonial from Barbara Corcoran, one of the sharks from Shark Tank, it wasn’t a walk in the park. The first time I asked, she was too busy. But, when I asked again, she agreed.

Here’s the surprising part: Because of her hectic schedule, Barbara asked me to write three testimonials, and she would choose one. She didn’t have time to read my whole book or even a chapter, and I totally get it.

I crafted three options, and she chose: “This book has straightforward, no-nonsense information for how to start a successful company. Read it!” Despite her busy schedule, she took the time to help me, and I’ll never forget it.

Nolan Bushnell’s Drive-By Testimonial

On my list was Nolan Bushnell, the brain behind Pong and the founder of Atari. My mentor, Steve Askin, was good pals with Nolan. When I asked Steve to introduce us, he swiftly provided a phone number.

I vividly remember calling Nolan while he cruised down a winding highway in Southern California. Amidst the wind blowing, he casually asked, “Steve, what do you need?” I explained I was working on a book to assist budding inventors.

In a five-minute roadside chat, I shared what my book was all about. Nolan, in his straightforward style, said, “Write this down: The ideas in this book are key to creating the kind of enterprise that will create hundreds of thousands of jobs in the future!” I thanked him, feeling immensely grateful for his invaluable input. So, once again, his help proved incredibly beneficial.

Tim Ferriss, the 4-Hour Workweek Maestro, Joins In

I wanted something special—a testimonial from Tim Ferriss, one of my very first students. You know him; he’s the guy behind the super famous “4-Hour Workweek” that’s selling like hotcakes worldwide.

Getting Tim to say a few words about my book meant the world to me. So, I dropped him an email, simply asking for a testimonial, and you know what he said? “Sure, send me the book.” No fuss.

What surprised me was that Tim didn’t just want a sneak peek or a summary. Nope, he asked for the whole manuscript. Every single word. So, I sent it over, and not long after, I got his testimonial.

Tim, being Tim, read every word. Here’s what he said: “For serious passive income… this is a great book.” – Tim Ferriss, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller, “The 4-Hour Workweek.”

Final Words

In each situation, the approach varied, but what’s universal is that entrepreneurs often need a helping hand. I’m grateful to each of these individuals for assisting me along the way. Remember, every contact matters; keep those cards and contact details. And, when you’ve found success, pass on the help to the next struggling entrepreneur. It’s a cycle of support that propels us all forward.
